EL KOUTOUBIA MOSQUE
one of the most attractive Mosques in Marrakech
THE HISTORY OF EL KOUTOUBIA MOSQUE
The first Koutoubia Mosque was built between 1147 and 1154 and ended in 1157 under the reign of the unified Caliph Ya’qub al-Mansur, where it was realized that the mihrab was neutral and not heading towards Mecca, which had undergone many changes until the end of the twelfth century.
The second mosque was built to match the first mosque. The planning, architectural designs, engravings, dimensions, and materials used in the construction were similar.
The layout and design of the minaret were identical in both mosques
THE ARCHITECTURE OF THE MOSQUE
The pride of the Almohad era was shaped by its mosques, walls, gates, and gardens next to the Manara Gardens created by the Andalusian architect. Al-Maliki lives under the command of the Almohad caliph at that time
It was named after the Koutoubia Mosque, based on the prestigious book trade at that time that was practiced in the market on its side, which included about a hundred booksellers.
It is joined in a rectangular prayer room with 17 porticoes directed vertically towards the qibla. And 11 domes decorated with carvings supported by columns and arches symmetrically and capitals such as those found in the Al-Qarawiyyin Mosque in Fez
The silo was built with sandstone, a plaster brought from the Jebel Gueliz in central Marrakesh, and its top was built with small stones covered with lime paint decorated with imaginary lines of convergence that cover the defects in cutting stones
Its minaret is decorated in its upper parts with a ceramic frieze painted the color of turquoise, which is the color of the Marrakesh buildings now. As for the pulpit, it is equipped with an automatic movement system that is considered one of the masterpieces of the Islamic art of carpentry, which was made in Cordoba and transferred to Marrakesh
